Pierre Schwerzmann is a Swiss painter based in Nyon. Alongside his career as a teacher, he has reflected on, or questioned, the ways in which we express ourselves, and the choice of these modes of expression - including in his collaborations.
Pierre Schwerzmann’s book Trente Vingt-quatre, for example, draws large squares within small squares. Lines, curves, diamonds, flat rectangles, dots on lines, angles, dots on a grid. Repetition, repetition on the page and in space to create new patterns, in grey pencil or in colour. A grey and white chessboard. The form follows the rhythm of the pages and the artist’s thoughts.
This body of work is the first draft of a research project in progress.
The sketches serve as a preparatory phase for other large-scale works and constitute a work in its own right. Alignment of forms: the research is transcribed as it is.
The artist doesn’t stop there. He composed some thirty unique covers by hand. The volume and sequence of the book follow the chronology of the drawings, and a protocol emerges following the reproduction of twelve A4 pages from the research in his binder.
The shape creates space, the line hollows out the surface of the paper. The enlargement of the sketches and the choice of fine paper for the print reinforce the presence of the squares on the graph paper, and illustrate the ritualisation of research in Pierre Schwerzmann’s pictorial practice.
This series of pages leads the reader into the second part of the book, where assemblages of 30 × 24 cm paintings are presented, which in turn take on the original dimensions of the sketches previously reproduced.
The book reveals the rhythm and chronological evolution of the artist’s thinking and fundamental systems. The title quotes the format of the previous book: Pierre Schwerzmann – 2013.
This collection of pages is an object to be leafed through, in which we can immerse ourselves to observe here and there a freeze-frame in Pierre Schwerzmann’s work in progress, a graphic object made up of lines and meaning.

Pierre Schwerzmann est un peintre suisse basé à Nyon. Parallèle a sa carrière d’enseignant il a nourri une réflexion, ou un questionnement, sur la manière d’exprimer, et sur le choix de ces modes d’expression - y compris dans ses collaborations.
Le livre Trente Vingt-quatre de Pierre Schwerzmann trace entre autres de grands carrés dans de petits carrés. Des lignes, des courbes, des losanges, des rectangles plats, des points sur des lignes, des angles, des points sur une grille. Répétition, répétition sur la feuille et dans l’espace pour créer de nouveaux motifs, au crayon gris ou en couleur. Un damier gris et blanc.
La forme suit le rythme des pages et des pensées de l’artiste.
Ce corpus est l’ébauche d’une recherche en cours.
Les esquisses servent de phase préparatoire à d’autres travaux de grande envergure et constituent une œuvre en soi. Alignement des formes : la recherche est transcrite telle qu’elle.
L’artiste ne s’arrête pas là. Il compose une trentaine de couvertures uniques à la main. Le volume et la séquence du livre suivent la chronologie des dessins et un protocole apparaît, suite à la reproduction de douze pages A4 issues des recherches de son classeur.
La forme crée l’espace, la ligne, creuse la surface du papier. L’agrandissement des croquis et le choix d’un papier fin pour l’impression renforcent la présence des carrés du papier millimétré et illustrent cette ritualisation de la recherche dans la pratique picturale de Pierre Schwerzmann.
Cette série de pages conduit le lecteur à une deuxième partie du livre, où sont présentés des assemblages de tableaux au format 30 × 24 cm qui prennent à leur tour la dimension originale des croquis précédemment reproduits.
L’ouvrage rend visible le rythme et l’évolution chronologique de la pensée et des systèmes fondamentaux de l’artiste. Le titre du livre cite le format du livre précédent: Pierre Schwerzmann – 2013.
Cette somme de pages propose un objet à feuilleter dans lequel on peut s’immerger pour observer ici et là un arrêt sur image dans l’œuvre de Pierre Schwerzmann en train de se faire, un objet graphique fait de lignes et de sens.
