Claudia de la Torre The covers might be soft has created a sensual, purely optical experience of the book, the possibility of a book and footnotes. Space becomes legible and fluid. The trace of the numbering, the notes extracted from the different works are precise copies.
Opening up the cohabitation of forms, writing and narrative: each note conceals a different story and strangely fits in with the previous one, creating a coherent whole. The reader is left wanting, with an element of chance and discovery of the language and structure of the book itself, studied and researched. While offering this flexibility, this inextinguishable play, the aesthetic experience is total and free. The covers might be soft was presented as part of the exhibition The Liberated Page, which took a global look at archival work on artists’ books and the various forms of research that have resulted from it. His unique book was produced for the exhibition in Geneva in 2014. Originally materialised by perforations in the pages, the footnotes have been replaced in the edited version by the printing of black dots, signifying through the effect of the paper’s transparency the position of the footnote callout on the following page and vice versa.
Laurence Sterne’s The Life and Opinions of Tristram Shandy, Gentleman is a reference point for Claudia de la Torre’s work on memory. She works on the book and its multiple forms. The circularity of the form, the essence, the essence of the black circle, which is reproduced over and over on the pages and symbolises the trace of the numbering; the narrative of the page. The order of reading (back and forth) and the figurative and/or literal meaning are at the heart of Claudia de la Torre’s editorial re-appropriations. The Secret Astronomy of Tristram Shandy also connects us to her work. As we turn the pages, the constellations and the night sky take us back to the sky of our childhood, to the astronomy of our dreams.
The reproduced notes, taken from various works, offer food for thought on key concepts. The Latin or Arabic numbering follows that of the original work. There is no pagination. A sensuality linked to the layout, rhythm and formats. We have tried to reproduce the whole on a single page.

Ouverture de la cohabitation des formes, de l’écriture et du récit, chaque note recèle une histoire différente et s’assemble étrangement à la précédente, créant un ensemble cohérent. Le lecteur devient désirant, lui laissant une part de hasard, de la découverte du langage, de la structure du livre même, étudiée, recherchée. Tout en offrant cette souplesse, ce jeu inextinguible, l’expérience esthétique est totale, libre. The covers might be soft fut présenté lors de l’exposition The Liberated Page offrant un regard global, travail d’archives sur les livres d’artistes et les différentes recherches qui en découlent. Son livre unique a été élaboré pour l’exposition à Genève, en 2014.
