As an ultimate defence wall for Yankee domesticity, the picket fence has been an abundantly recurring pattern in cinema and TV series. Its major purpose is to symbolise all the innocence of the American Dream, which is inevitably bound to be sooner or later contaminated by the perversity of ill-intentioned elements, from Indians to tornadoes, to uncontrollable cars, psycho neighbours, unleashed dinosaurs and even the odd ear left on the lawn, depending on the time and genre.
